Before you hop on the plane, there are some things to bear in mind to make your transition as smooth as possible. ¡Vamos!

1. Apply for Visa and Legal Permits

First things first! Depending on how long you plan to stay, you’ll need to apply for a temporary (for less than 4 years) or permanent visa. Choosing one or another will depend on your situation.
If you’re moving to work, you’ll need first a work permit, which your Mexican employer will provide you. In this situation, applying for a temporary visa may be more straightforward, as meeting all the requirements for a permanent one can be more challenging at the beginning.
💡Find out how to register to local authorities before your arrival, as you’ll need a proof of address within Mexico.

2. Finding a House

Whether you choose a beachfront bungalow or a charming hacienda, do some research on your housing options. There is a lot to choose from.
While you’re still figuring out your long-term plans, renting is usually the best option, as it offers you flexibility. Its always helpful to check out local Facebook groups to find good deals on short and long term rentals. Buying a property can be a big investment (and one we will talk about more in other articles!), so keep in mind all the responsibilities, your lifestyle, and goals to decide what suits you best.

3. Choose a Reliable Moving Company

Hiring the right moving company is key to ensuring a safe and efficient move. Start by comparing different companies that are specialized in international moves to Mexico.
Check their services, read reviews to know how good their reputation is, and, most important, request quotes. Comparing their prices, services, and level of professionalism from each company will allow you to make the most informed decision!

4. Pack (Accurately) On Time

Sorting out your belongings is key when deciding which ones are important enough to take with you. Do some decluttering, organize, and start packing systematically, grouping all similar items. This will make the unpacking much easier😉. Don’t forget to protect all fragile items so they are carefully handed during the move.
Want to save some time and stress? Look out for a professional! Many moving companies will offer you packing services. Their expertise and materials will secure your belongings while you relax for your new adventure in Mexico.

5. Getting Your Finances and Utilities in Order

As much as you want to postpone this step, such aspects are key. Before your arrival to Mexico, make sure you’re taking care of opening a bank account, completing tax forms, securing an address, and setting up all the utilities in your new home.
You’ll probably need to prepare in advance some documents to establish all the accounts, so make sure everything is in order!

6. Find the Right Health Insurance Plan

As soon as you get your visa, you’ll be eligible for Mexico’s healthcare system (Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social), which can cost around $400, which is reasonably priced.
However, the government-provided healthcare program only offers basic coverage. Considering additional international health insurance can be a smart choice. While these private plans can be more expensive, but they can also provide peace of mind knowing that you’re covered for a range of medical services.

7. Learn About Your Destination

Last but not least, time to explore! Familiarize yourself with Mexico’s culture, tradition, and popular attractions of the area you’ll be residing in. It will make it easier and better equipped to embrace the local lifestyle and connect with the community.
Make sure you follow all these steps to make the most of your exciting adventure in Mexico and get ready to uncover the wonders that await you!
